Money
You cannot change money outside
of Morocco.
There is no restriction as to
how much you bring in and if you change your money at a good bank such
as BMCE or Banque Populaire and keep your currency exchange slips then
you can change dirhams for your own currency again when you leave.
The dirham is the Moroccan currency and is divided into 100 centimes.
Notes are 10, 20, 50, 100
and 200 dirhams; coins are 1, 5 and 10 dirhams. and 5, 10, 20 and 50
centimes. Please note it is illegal to export the currency.
Banks, hotels and some large
shops accept Travellers Cheques and major credit cards, and cash
dispensers (ATM’s) can be found in larger towns.
In smaller places, hard cash is the best!
A money belt is useful and try
not to carry all your money in the same place i.e. some in your belt and
some in your wallet.
You may leave your papers and valuables in a hotel safe.
Theft is not a usual occurrence in Morocco although in the busy souks it
is a higher possibility, so conceal money or leave it in hotel safes.
